Akatori finally has a release date: the 2.5D Metroidvania from Contrast Games will launch for PC via Steam on August 5, 2026, followed by PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on August 12. A Switch 2 version is planned for 2027. The new trailer shows fast movement, staff-based combat, interconnected worlds, and a visual style that places pixel-art characters inside stylized 3D environments.

The story follows Mako, a young monk raised in the Firebird Temple. Her journey takes her through multiple realms threatened by the Amber Storms, a corrupting force that infects and distorts living beings. Mako is accompanied by a mysterious red bird sealed inside her staff, tying the narrative premise directly to the tool that defines traversal and combat. The adventure connects environmental storytelling and character encounters with themes of growth, resilience, and self-discovery.
The staff sits at the center of the entire design. It works as a weapon, a movement tool, and a way to reach secrets hidden across the world. Mako can chain ground and aerial combos, throw the staff as a projectile, and pull it back in the middle of motion, while moving through vertical spaces with gliding, wall-hooking, sliding, and parkour. The result is a structure built around constant momentum, where platforming and combat are meant to flow together.
Akatori also leans into myth-inspired biomes, from medieval Asian landscapes to floating bamboo islands and more otherworldly dimensions. Enemy encounters are shaped by living ecosystems, with creatures able to fight each other, trigger traps, and react to hazards in the environment. Boss fights are designed to break from standard patterns as well, with underwater escapes, rhythm-based challenges, and multi-phase battles. Each location and major encounter will have its own musical theme.
