Marvelous and Vanillaware have announced Muramasa: Revenant Blades, a side-scrolling action RPG coming in early 2027 to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. The project brings Muramasa back for modern platforms in a new edition that combines Muramasa Rebirth and the Genroku Legends add-on content for the first time in a single package.

The game takes players to Japan’s Genroku era, a world shaped by myth, restless spirits, and Demon Blades. Its story follows six fabled protagonists, each tied to their own tale and forced to fight through a land overflowing with wickedness. Rather than focusing on a single hero, Muramasa: Revenant Blades builds its identity around multiple journeys, letting each character chase control of their fate through a different fighting style.
Action remains the center of the experience. Muramasa: Revenant Blades is built around fast, fluid, and frenetic hack-and-slash combat, where Demon Blades cut through malevolent spirits and dangerous villains. The roster is designed to feel varied, moving from chaos-inducing swordplay to precise ninja techniques and even more unusual approaches, including a horde of cats that can answer the player’s call. That variety gives each protagonist a distinct rhythm while keeping the focus on sharp 2D combat.
This new release is being presented as a more complete and elevated version of the Muramasa experience. The game will feature a 4K world steeped in Japanese myth and culture, bringing extra clarity to Vanillaware’s illustrated style. The appeal comes from the same contrast that defined the original identity: beautiful handcrafted scenery, legendary figures, supernatural enemies, and combat that can shift from elegant movement to screen-filling mayhem in an instant.
The announcement was accompanied by trailers in English and Japanese, setting the stage for Muramasa’s return across current platforms. A specific release date has not been announced beyond the early 2027 window, but the core pitch is already clear. Muramasa: Revenant Blades will reintroduce Vanillaware’s action RPG as a complete package, bringing together six mythical tales, refined 2D battles, Demon Blades, and the combined content of Muramasa Rebirth and Genroku Legends.
