Once Upon a KATAMARI will come to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, launching the same day as the “Rolling LIVE Highlights” DLC. Bandai Namco and RENGAME are bringing the latest Katamari entry to Nintendo’s new system with a version that improves on the Switch release through higher-definition visuals, a smoother frame rate and mouse control support.
The Switch 2 release will be available in different formats. The physical edition will be a game-key card bundle including “Rolling LIVE Highlights,” while digital players will be able to buy either the base game or the downloadable content bundle. The existing Switch version will also receive an update that adds mouse controls and improves frame rate when played on Switch 2, giving current owners a separate technical benefit.
“Rolling LIVE Highlights” adds ten new quests, twelve new songs, six new cousins and eighteen accessories. That makes it more than a small cosmetic drop, since music, character variety and customization are part of the series’ appeal. The DLC should give players more reasons to return to the game’s surreal rolling loop while expanding the playful side of its presentation.
Once Upon a KATAMARI follows the familiar structure of rolling a katamari through different eras and locations, picking up objects of increasing size to restore the stars. The story begins after the King accidentally crushes Earth, the Moon and several planets while messing with a strange scroll. The journey then moves through worlds such as the Jurassic Era, the Ice Age and historic Japan, with new support tools like the magnet helping change how objects are gathered.
The Steam version also gives a useful measure of how the game has been received so far: Once Upon a KATAMARI holds a 91 percent positive user rating, based on around 1,300 reviews. That reception sits alongside a package already available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch and PC, with single-player rolling, cousin customization and KatamariBall, a four-player competitive mode playable online or offline against CPU opponents.
