State of Decay 3 Reveals Gameplay and Adds PS5 Version

Xbox Game Studios and Undead Labs have shown the first gameplay footage of State of Decay 3 while also confirming a newly announced PlayStation 5 version. The game will launch in 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store, but the main focus of the reveal is how the sequel’s structure is taking shape. Survival is not built around one hero, but around managing a whole community in a world still broken by the zombie apocalypse.

The gameplay reveal brings back the core idea of the series: build safety, scavenge supplies, fight the dead, and make decisions that can permanently change the lives of the survivors. Humanity was nearly wiped out by the outbreak, and years later a new zombie evolution is threatening to overrun the landscape. Players will need to push back, reclaim territory, gather resources, build settlements, and create enough stability for their community to survive.

Choices remain central to the experience. Deciding where to live, what to build, and who to recruit is more than a management layer, because permadeath is always present. Every trip outside the settlement, every fight, and every risky attempt to help another survivor can turn into a permanent loss. That keeps the survival loop tied to consequence, forcing players to weigh reward against danger before committing to each move.

Progression will also come from expanding a network of settlements. Players can claim multiple bases, reinforce defenses, improve their arsenal, craft homemade explosives, and heal injured characters to keep morale from collapsing. Other survivor enclaves can be discovered, trusted, and eventually recruited, adding more weight to exploration and social choices. Online multiplayer will support up to four players in a shared world, where friends can start a community from scratch, combine strategies, and shape a settlement network that reflects their collective decisions. Future content is also planned to add new features and challenges after launch.
