Others make you want to keep going simply because you need to know what happens next. Apple Crumble belongs firmly in the second group. We played the demo of Happy Broccoli Games&#8217; latest adventure, from the studio behind the two brilliant Duck Detective games, and came away thoroughly impressed. Within minutes of meeting this family, you get the feeling that something isn&#8217;t right. It should be a perfectly ordinary family gathering, but the people you meet and the things happening around them quickly suggest otherwise. Apple Crumble mixes a slightly unsettling atmosphere with moments of warmth and humour. We won&#8217;t spoil the situations that unfold during the demo, because discovering them is much of the appeal. Getting to know each family member, listening to their conversations and wondering what they might be plotting is what drives the experience forward. Even the more eccentric details feel like a natural part of the peculiar mood the developers are creating.<\/p>\n<p>The voice acting is one of the game&#8217;s greatest strengths. Every character benefits from performances that give the dialogue energy and personality, whether through a change in tone, a well-timed pause or the delivery of an apparently harmless line. Much of the enjoyment comes from spending time with these people, and the performances make that time genuinely entertaining. We found ourselves paying close attention even when there was nothing to do beyond listening, because the characters themselves were enough to keep us engaged.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apple Crumble combines outstanding voice acting with a beautifully crafted family mystery that keeps you eager to uncover what&#8217;s really happening.<\/strong> The art direction is just as impressive. Its first-person perspective lets you examine the home and its objects up close, while the distinctive illustrated look gives the setting plenty of personality. The visual details establish a believable setting for an ordinary celebration while allowing the uneasy atmosphere to develop around it. That contrast between domestic familiarity and mounting suspicion is central to the game&#8217;s appeal.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth being clear about what you&#8217;re actually doing, though. Anyone expecting an investigation full of demanding deductions, perhaps because they&#8217;ve played Duck Detective, may be surprised. The section we played doesn&#8217;t contain proper puzzles. Jess keeps a notebook with short objectives, and progressing mostly involves finding particular objects and following the next step of the story. The notebook is a helpful reminder of what comes next, but it isn&#8217;t a deep deduction system. Apple Crumble currently asks more of your attention as an audience member than of your problem-solving skills.<\/p>\n<p>That didn&#8217;t bother us during the demo. The tasks fit naturally between story beats, giving you a reason to explore without repeatedly stopping the narrative. The motivation to continue comes from questions about the family rather than the pleasure of cracking a difficult riddle. If you&#8217;re looking for complex brainteasers, this introduction won&#8217;t offer much to satisfy that appetite. If you enjoy character-driven stories where every conversation makes you more curious about the bigger picture, there&#8217;s considerably more to appreciate here.<\/p>\n<p>We also played on Steam Deck, where Apple Crumble runs beautifully. The text is perfectly readable on the handheld&#8217;s screen, and we encountered no technical issues or missing features. Everything feels polished, reinforcing the impression of a carefully finished game. Its dialogue-driven structure and straightforward objectives are also a great fit for playing on Valve&#8217;s handheld, letting you focus entirely on the story without distractions.<\/p>\n<p>Happy Broccoli Games expects the full game to last around 60\u201390 minutes and plans to release it on December 3, 2026. We still don&#8217;t know whether later sections will introduce more substantial investigative mechanics, or whether Apple Crumble will remain focused almost entirely on storytelling. After playing this demo, we&#8217;re not especially concerned about the absence of difficult puzzles. What matters more is whether the developers can sustain the quality of the performances, the atmosphere and the writing.
