Capcom has moved up the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The swordplay action game will launch on September 4 rather than the previously announced September 25 date, bringing it forward by three weeks. The revised release date applies to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC. On PC, the game will be released through Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store. The schedule change brings the return of Onimusha closer, with a new dark fantasy adventure focused on intense blade-driven action.
The game takes players to Edo-period Kyoto, a historical capital twisted by a malevolent force known as Malice. Its locations are shaped by mystery, danger, and intrigue, while threats emerge in the form of Genma, monstrous beings from the underworld. The protagonist is a samurai who carries the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants him the power to kill these demons. His journey is filled with bloody encounters, but it is also driven by a search for a reason to fight and an answer waiting at the end of his path.
Swordplay remains at the centre of the experience, following one of the series’ defining traditions. Way of the Sword also brings back Issen, the critical counter action that rewards precise timing and helped define the rhythm of earlier Onimusha games. Close-range fights, supernatural monsters, and a historic Kyoto reshaped into a nightmare create a formula where inspiration from real events meets violent dark fantasy. It is not simply a visual return to the series’ roots: the game puts direct confrontations, pressure-filled battles, and every clash with the Genma back at the forefront.
The Onimusha series began in 2001 and has built a distinct identity around feudal Japan, samurai, and demonic threats. This chapter continues that tradition with a new story, while the currently available demo offers an early chance to enter its world before launch. The demo is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC; Switch 2 is instead included among the platforms for the full release. With September 4 now set as the launch date, the wait for Onimusha: Way of the Sword has become notably shorter.
