Volatiles lets you build a battlefield inside your mind

Team Instant Defeat and publisher 11 bit studios have revealed Volatiles, a top-down action roguelike in which players construct their battlefield during combat. Announced at the Triple-I Showcase, the game is scheduled to reach PC through Steam in 2027. Every run starts with a single tile, then grows as players fight alien hordes, collect experience, and level up.

Adding tiles introduces weapons, upgrades, healing, tools, and defenses. Their placement matters to a build because players control how the map develops and which combinations become available. Expanding the arena is therefore part of preparing for the next fight. Different layouts and risky synergies offer opportunities to experiment, while failed attempts provide lessons about which arrangements work and which leave the player in trouble.

The battles take place inside the protagonist’s mind. Trapped in a covert laboratory with no memory of arriving there, the character is told that this is a form of treatment. Something buried within their mind instead produces visions of impossible battlefields. Each run pushes farther into an analog science fiction nightmare, watched by strangers outside it. Meanwhile, whatever is growing within the protagonist is learning how to take control.

Failure returns the character to a water-filled tank, ready for another attempt with the knowledge gained from the previous run. The laboratory setting connects the repeated battles to the mystery surrounding the treatment, giving the player a reason to question both the people observing and the force generating these visions.

Volatiles currently has a 2027 release window, with no specific date announced. Players tracking it alongside other upcoming computer releases can use the Playority PC calendar to add games to their accounts and receive updates about release dates.
