Expeditions: Samurai enters Early Access on August 7

Expeditions: Samurai will launch in Early Access for PC via Steam on August 7. The new party-based RPG from Campfire Cabal, published by THQ Nordic, brings the Expeditions series to Sengoku-era Japan, during a civil war moving toward its decisive turning point. Before launch, a roadmap will outline what players can expect at the start of Early Access and which updates are planned for later.

The premise begins with a clear historical twist. In 1600, navigator William Adams reached Japan and later became the first European granted the title of samurai; in Expeditions: Samurai, Adams never leaves England. Instead, the player arrives on the Japanese coast aboard the Dutch frigate De Albatros, newly elected as the leader of a rough crew of privateers.

The official website for Expeditions: Samurai frames the adventure around war, diplomacy and survival, where the captain’s role goes beyond battlefield command. The player is drawn into intrigue and shifting alliances between powerful warlords whose struggle will shape the country’s future, while decisions can affect the crew, allies and people encountered throughout the campaign.

The crew is also treated as more than a list of combat roles. Each companion has a personal story to uncover, provided the player earns enough trust to reach it. Relationships can develop into friendship, rivalry or romance, tying character management to the broader campaign. That makes the social side of the journey part of the pressure, especially when loyalty, ambition and mission objectives stop pointing in the same direction.

Combat remains turn-based, but the system is built around pace, positioning and flexibility. Movement, attacks and interruptions can play out simultaneously, while stealth and gadgets allow players to set up ambushes, split the team in real time and strike before enemies can react. The arsenal mixes pirate weapons with iconic Japanese arms, supported by abilities, crafted items and loadouts that can be adjusted against different threats.

Expeditions: Samurai will also introduce drop-in/drop-out co-op to the series. Solo players take on the role of their own Captain Flynn, while co-op turns the campaign into the story of a pair of twins. Two players can coordinate sneaking, distractions and combat maneuvers, but conversations add friction of their own: speaking to characters at the same time can lead to competition over major decisions or even a companion’s affection.
