Gears of War: E-Day has revealed its multiplayer for the first time with a Metallica-soundtracked trailer and a detailed developer overview from The Coalition. The main additions are Horde Siege, a 12-player player-versus-environment mode divided across three squads, and the return of competitive Versus. Players will be able to test both sides of the multiplayer offering through an Early Access Open Beta beginning August 6. Access will be available with a pre-order on Xbox Series or Steam, or through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

Horde Siege takes the original Horde concept and expands it across the largest multiplayer maps created for the series. Three squads of four enter the same stage, but each group is sent out on its own individual missions. That setup is designed to create unpredictable battles, with several objectives and groups operating simultaneously across one wider battlefield. Classes shape how players contribute to their squad, while optional objectives provide additional rewards for teams willing to take on more risks during a match.
Versus brings back the familiar player-versus-player side of Gears of War, updated around E-Day’s new movement mechanics. The added mobility creates more ways to approach squad-based fights, reposition under pressure, and make decisive plays capable of changing the outcome of a round. Four modes will be included in the Versus offering, although their individual details have not yet been outlined. The multiplayer presentation also briefly points toward content planned after launch, without providing a full roadmap.
The reveal gives E-Day a multiplayer structure split between larger cooperative battles and more traditional competitive matches. Horde Siege focuses on classes, simultaneous missions, and optional objectives across unusually large maps, while Versus preserves direct team combat and adapts it to the sequel’s movement systems. Gears of War: E-Day will launch on October 6 for Xbox Series and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store. It will also be available through Game Pass, with the August beta serving as the first public opportunity to experience its multiplayer changes.
