GOBBLE is a hand-painted 2D platformer about eating your enemies

GOBBLE will launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam. Developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published by NIS America, the new 2D action platformer combines a fully hand-painted visual style with a considerably less gentle mechanic: defeated enemies can be eaten to restore health and fuel powerful abilities. The adventure is designed for a single player and will be distributed digitally across its announced platforms.

The story begins after the protagonist’s family goes missing, sending them across this unusual world with Scythariel at their side. The companion appears as a demonic bird but can transform into a scythe during combat. Once enemies have been cut down, their corpses become a resource. Consuming them provides additional health, while that same health can then be spent to activate stronger abilities.

Those powers also play a role outside combat. GOBBLE uses them as traversal tools for crossing dangerous gaps and reaching hidden secrets throughout its stages. Every level will contain its own set of collectibles as well, giving players additional reasons to explore beyond the most direct route and search each environment carefully.

Another distinctive element is the way sound becomes part of the artwork itself. Rustling leaves, cold air, and other effects are represented visually on screen, making the hand-painted world feel unusually reactive. GOBBLE therefore connects combat, platforming, and exploration through a resource system where health doubles as fuel for special abilities, creating a constant choice between preserving survivability and spending it to gain extra power.
