God of War Laufey has been delayed to May 20, 2027, moving its release back just over three months from the previously announced February 16 date. Santa Monica Studio confirmed the decision after determining that the game needs additional development time, although it did not point to any particular technical or production problem. The team also thanked players for their enthusiasm following the game’s reveal in June, explaining that the extra months will be spent polishing the experience before launch.

The upcoming installment marks a significant change for the series, as it will be the first mainline God of War game to feature someone other than Kratos as its protagonist. This time, players will take control of Faye, also known as Laufey the Just, Kratos’s wife and the mother of Atreus. Although she plays an important role in the story of 2018’s God of War, her death takes place before the events of that game, making her own adventure an opportunity to explore a different part of the mythology.
Laufey’s story begins after her funeral, when she unexpectedly awakens in an unfamiliar land and discovers that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are in danger. Saving her family means travelling through the Everywhen, an afterlife inhabited by gods from different mythologies who are fighting for control. With dangerous magic spread throughout this realm, Faye will have to confront the powerful beings competing for dominance while trying to prevent her family’s future from being threatened.
The delay now places God of War Laufey toward the end of May rather than the beginning of the year, giving Santa Monica Studio more time to complete its work. Further updates are planned, although no specific date for the next presentation has been announced. Players who want to follow the game’s progress can use the Playority release calendar to add God of War Laufey to their wishlist and receive notifications about future updates.
