Iron Bramble Demo Preview: Grappling and Gunplay

In Iron Bramble, the first obstacle you need to overcome is the grappling hook itself. It doesn’t pull you straight towards whatever you’ve attached it to. The cord stretches, and getting where you want to go depends on Lilac’s momentum, your jumping speed and when you let go. The mechanic comes from the same creative team that worked on Rusted Moss, but this time it’s part of a metroidvania set inside a vast cyber-gothic structure. The free Steam demo, available since September 16, 2026, covers the first two areas and includes combat encounters, giving you a chance to see how shooting and exploration work together.

The hook lets you approach the same obstacle in several ways. Sometimes you’ll need to swing to gain height; elsewhere, you can use your momentum to cross a gap you couldn’t clear with an ordinary jump. Attach the cord at the wrong point or release too late, and Lilac might hit a wall or land on spikes. Iron Bramble’s grappling hook sends you into walls at first, then lets you pull off crossings you thought were impossible. You’re learning how to control a moving character on the end of an elastic cord, rather than looking for the designated place to grapple. You need room to swing, the right angle and somewhere safe to land.

There’s a steep learning curve, especially if you’re used to grappling hooks that automatically reel you in. Even a short crossing can take several attempts while you work out how the cord behaves. That frustration isn’t necessarily evidence of broken controls, since the elasticity is a deliberate part of the design. Still, it’s a demanding choice, and some players won’t enjoy having to practice basic traversal for so long. Certain obstacles allow you to restart from nearby after a fall, which helps keep a failed attempt from turning into a lengthy trip back through the same room.

Guns make the action busier. You can fire while jumping or swinging, so keeping enemies in your sights also means paying attention to where Lilac is headed. The hook can carry you towards a target or pull you out of the way of incoming shots. Boss encounters in the demo bring those actions together instead of treating platforming and combat as separate activities. Once bullets start filling the screen, it’s easy to concentrate on aiming and forget about your next landing.

There’s a strange story behind the machinery, too. Lilac is a fae explorer entering a huge structure populated by robots inhabited by the souls of the dead. They’re being punished for sins they can no longer remember. Detailed pixel art brings together worn industrial environments, gloomy corridors and figures that could belong in a dark fairy tale. The contrast between those elements gives the world an unsettling atmosphere, while the opening areas establish questions about the structure and the people trapped inside it.

The full game, planned for 2027, is supposed to include more than twenty guns, trinkets with different effects and dresses that alter Lilac’s abilities. The developers have also discussed rocket jumping, using an explosion to launch yourself higher. Those are plans for the finished game, not a list of things you can already try in the two demo areas. What matters is whether later levels make room for different combinations of abilities or mostly ask you to repeat techniques you’ve already mastered.

The demo has received updates addressing respawn points, certain grappling-hook behaviors and ability balance. Reports about problems in earlier builds therefore shouldn’t automatically be treated as current issues. One practical detail matters before you start: demo saves won’t transfer to the full release. These two areas are best approached as an opportunity to learn the mechanics and try out the combat, rather than the opening hours of a playthrough you’ll be able to carry over in 2027.
