Guild Wars is entering the card game space with Mistbound, a new free-to-play digital collectible card game officially licensed by ArenaNet. Developed by NC and globally published by bilibili, the project is the first Guild Wars spin-off built around the CCG format. No release date or platform details have been announced yet, but Mistbound is positioned as an experience that connects Tyria’s MMO legacy with deckbuilding strategy, offering both single-player and multiplayer content.

The game is built around a five-by-three tactical battlefield, where players take the role of a commander and deploy cards onto the grid. Unlike CCGs where units remain fixed in a lane, Mistbound allows both commanders and units to move and reposition in multiple directions on every turn, responding to enemy movement as the match develops. That system makes the board an active part of every encounter. It is not only about which cards are played, but also when and where they attack, protect an ally, block an opening, or create a route for the next move.
The idea is to keep the first matches approachable without giving up long-term depth. Placing units and engaging in combat should be easy to understand, while the number of options grows as players learn to read distance, turn order, and control of the board. Knockbacks, pulls, flanking opportunities, and shifts between offensive and defensive positioning form the basis of more advanced combinations. Commanders are not passive support characters sitting behind the action either: they step into the battle and can become decisive playmakers at key moments.
Another major part of Mistbound is its Commander × Profession system. Iconic Guild Wars characters enter the field as commanders, each with their own abilities, traits, and tactical identity. The professions draw direct inspiration from Guild Wars 2’s nine long-running classes, preserving familiar combat styles while creating new combinations for the card game format. Pairing commanders and professions freely should give players room to build decks around board control, aggressive pressure, movement, resource management, or a mixture of several approaches.
Mistbound will also draw on the franchise’s lore, creatures, characters, art, and music to create a battlefield that feels familiar to Tyria fans. Its presentation aims to refresh recognizable faces without abandoning the series’ fantasy identity, while contributions from original music creators and character-driven voice performances are meant to strengthen the connection with the Guild Wars universe. The project will include both solo modes and a competitive PvP arena, alongside content designed with community involvement in mind.
For ArenaNet, NC, and bilibili, the announcement opens a new direction for Guild Wars without replacing the series’ MMO identity. Mistbound instead looks to translate its classes, world, and competitive side into a card game where position matters as much as the deck itself. Future opportunities to play have not been detailed, but a free-to-play CCG built around dynamic movement and commander-profession combinations already gives the project a clear identity.
