Prelude: Dark Pain will enter Early Access for PC via Steam on July 27, 2026. The dark fantasy tactical RPG from Quickfire Games, published by Firesquid and Gamersky Games, launches as a work in progress with a first build focused on turn-based combat, squad management, world-map exploration and the opening act of Soren’s story.

The game takes place in Statera, a world ravaged by the Dark Pain and dominated across wide territories by the Order of the Ashen Crusade. Soren, a former warrior now living as a blacksmith, is pulled back into conflict after an attack on his family and becomes the spark for an uprising. The official website for Prelude: Dark Pain keeps that premise at the center, tying the resistance to choices, oppression and rifts in reality that allow creatures of Pain to cross into the world.
Combat is built around grid-based tactical battles with parties of up to five heroes. The full roster is planned to include more than twenty playable characters, each with two talent branches and a pool of skills to shape their role. Eight class types cover different approaches, from ranged damage to magical support and assassins, while individual abilities can be equipped to create combos and stronger synergies across the squad.
The Early Access version will include Act 1, nine heroes, around sixty-three skills, the world map, main quests, side quests, tasks, random encounters and final cutscenes. It is estimated at about fifteen hours of gameplay. The full version is planned after roughly one year and should expand into every act of Soren’s story, all twenty-plus heroes, eight class types, twenty factions and seventy enemy types, including bosses.
Progression also extends beyond the battlefield through base management. Players will craft weapons and equipment, improve resources and send heroes on raids to rescue free villages, gather materials or spy on rivals. Those assignments have a tactical cost, because characters sent away cannot be summoned into battle for a while, forcing each decision to balance short-term strength against long-term preparation.
Choices will also affect the main story and the heroes who can be recruited, with some characters potentially missed because of earlier decisions. A demo is available on Steam, while the Early Access roadmap is built around player feedback, balance work, new content and gradual expansion toward the complete campaign.
