Star Fox Adventures returns today on Switch 2’s GameCube library

Star Fox Adventures joins the GameCube collection on Nintendo Classics for Nintendo Switch 2 today. Rare’s adventure game is being added to the library available to Switch 2 owners with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription, bringing the total number of GameCube titles on the service to eleven.

The return matters because Star Fox Adventures remains one of the strangest entries in the series. Instead of focusing on space combat and Arwing missions, it puts Fox McCloud inside a third-person adventure built around exploration, puzzles, close-range combat, and large environments to move through.

Its background is just as unusual. Before it became a Star Fox game, the project was known as Dinosaur Planet and was planned as Rare’s final major title for Nintendo 64. Development targeted large areas, voiced dialogue, RAM Expansion Pak support, and a 512Mb cartridge, which would have been the largest released for the system.

As development took longer than expected, Nintendo moved the project to GameCube and reworked it around the Star Fox franchise. The final game became something different from the rest of the series, closer to a classic action adventure than a rail shooter, but that shift is also what made it memorable.

With Star Fox Adventures now included, the Switch 2 GameCube library also features Chibi-Robo!, F-Zero GX, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Luigi’s Mansion, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Soulcalibur II, Super Mario Strikers, Super Mario Sunshine, and Wario World. Pokémon Colosseum has also been announced for the collection, though it does not have a release date yet.
