A free Bolt of Whalington demo will launch on Steam on November 5, 2026, at 03:00 UTC, developer Orca Studio has announced. The news comes with a teaser for the exploration-focused Metroidvania starring Bolt, a curious Siamese cat, and his mech. Their adventure takes place in Whalington, a mysterious floating whale-city. Publisher UltraPlayers is handling the PC release, with the full game planned for 2027.

The central mechanic is the Rule Terminal, which lets players change the world’s rules instead of relying solely on unlocked abilities. Bolt can transform into a mouse to squeeze through a narrow opening. This transformation affects more than movement: creatures that previously treated him as an enemy may now be willing to talk. Progress can therefore depend on experimenting with the environment rather than simply finding another key.
Different regions have unusual conditions. Anti-gravity lets Bolt walk along walls, while Schrödinger’s platforms appear and vanish depending on the light. Players can also use a bottle of soap to pass through a solid wall, and even an ordinary toilet can become transportation. These mechanics encourage players to understand how each area behaves and find uses for apparently unrelated objects.
Familiar Metroidvania elements remain part of the design. Players switch between Bolt’s agility and the mech’s power, gain abilities, and revisit earlier locations to reach blocked paths. Combat includes bosses whose attack patterns must be learned, plus new weapons and combat abilities. Players will need to recognize openings and choose when to strike instead of attacking without a plan.
The demo features four areas: Sardine, Kitchen, Cabins, and Residence. Kitchen will be fully playable, with portions of the other three also available. Orca Studio estimates that the main story will take 60 to 90 minutes, extending to 90 to 150 minutes for players who explore thoroughly. The final game’s map layout and story progression may differ from this preview.
Orca Studio is a three-person indie team formed through an online development community. The studio wants discovery to be rewarding in its own right, using humor and unexpected interactions rather than focusing on punishing difficulty. The teaser introduces the hand-drawn setting and its unusual mechanics before players can try them in November.
