Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has received a new story trailer ahead of its October 2 launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam. Bandai Namco and Bandai Namco Aces are framing the next flight action entry around aerial rivalries, large-scale military threats, and superweapons that can reshape control of the battlefield.
The trailer focuses on a head-to-head battle between the leader of the Elite Sotoan Air Force Shadows Unit, known as Shadow 22, and Joker Flight, led by the Wings of Theve. Rival aces remain one of the series’ clearest strengths, with dogfights built around positioning, timing, and the constant pressure of reading threats at high speed.
The conflict will not stay limited to the sky. The campaign also includes ground-based and long-range superweapons, pushing players to lead their squad to victory and save the Federation of Central Usea. The new material presents a war fought across multiple layers, where aircraft, strategic facilities, and oversized weapon systems all affect the mission flow.
One of the biggest gameplay confirmations is the return of Annihilation Battles. These missions task players with counterattacking Sotoan forces by destroying as many enemies and targets as possible within a time limit. The freedom comes from choosing which targets to hit, in what order, and when to return to the return line to reload weapons before pushing back into danger.
Ace Combat 8 also adds chain destruction to give target priority more tactical value. Hitting flammable objects, such as oil tanks inside an enemy base, can trigger explosions that destroy nearby buildings. Downed aircraft can also matter after impact, because structures close to the crash site may be damaged or destroyed, adding more weight to the timing and direction of attacks.
Among the major threats is Megafloat Fatsia, a marine megafacility off the west coast of the Republic of Sotoa. It functions as both an arms factory and a supply station for landing invasions, stretches six kilometers, includes a 2,000-meter runway on its upper deck, and is defended by CIWS, SAM batteries, railguns, and UAVs tied into its sensor network.
Another danger is Tonitrus Spear, an attack satellite based on a kinetic weapon designed to strike from low orbit without using nuclear explosives.
