Square Enix has reintroduced Dragon Quest XII with the new subtitle Beyond Dreams, marking a clear shift from the project first announced in 2021 as The Flames of Fate. The team confirmed that development was restarted from scratch after an internal reshuffle, and that the game now comes with a new logo and an updated presentation.

Yosuke Saito said the original version ran into several obstacles, which eventually led to a full reset. That means the current version is not just a continuation of the earlier concept, but a fresh direction for the mainline series. Square Enix did not share gameplay details, a release window or platform information, but the announcement makes it clear that the project is still active.
Yuji Horii offered the only concrete story detail so far: the lead is a young hero troubled by strange dreams. The narrative is built around what lies beyond those dreams, suggesting a more hopeful tone than the darker framing some fans may have expected. Even so, the studio has kept the rest of the plot under wraps for now.
Two long-time Dragon Quest names remain attached to the game. Akira Toriyama is still handling the characters, while Koichi Sugiyama is credited for the music. No language list or regional release details have been announced yet.
