Onimusha: Way of the Sword now has a release date: Capcom’s new entry in the series is set to launch on September 25, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. The date was confirmed during June’s State of Play, alongside a playable demo that is already available and gives players an early look at the game’s combat, tone, and historical fantasy setting.

The new Onimusha takes the series back to Edo-period Kyoto, but this is not a clean historical reconstruction. The city is overrun by the Genma, demonic creatures that push the game toward dark fantasy, supernatural horror, and blood-heavy samurai action. At the center of it all is Miyamoto Musashi, reimagined here as a swordsman equipped with the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical glove that gives him the power to fight enemies ordinary humans cannot handle.
The available hands-on previews points to a game that is more immediate and physical than a simple franchise revival might suggest. Way of the Sword focuses on close-range sword combat, parries, stamina management, and the absorption of enemy souls, which can restore health and resources during fights. Its structure appears largely linear, moving through cursed streets, demon-filled temples, and burning villages, with occasional light puzzle elements tied to the gauntlet’s Oni Vision.
Comparisons with modern soulslike games are easy to understand, especially when the game leans into timing, reading enemy attacks, and one-on-one duels. Still, the preview describes something faster and more exaggerated, closer to classic Capcom action than to a pure FromSoftware-style challenge. The demo section ends with a boss fight against Sasaki Ganryu, where careful parrying, stamina control, and the ability to absorb souls become especially important.
For now, the practical picture is clear. Onimusha: Way of the Sword has a confirmed date, a demo, and a more defined identity than a simple comeback announcement. It looks like Capcom is trying to modernize the series without sanding away its stranger mix of history, demons, swordplay, and arcade-like action energy.
