Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will launch on December 10 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. LEVEL-5 is bringing Hershel Layton and Luke Triton back to the center of a new puzzle adventure set one year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.
The setting moves to Steam Bison, an American town shaped by steam technology that has grown quickly enough to surpass London’s pace of development. A mysterious incident disrupts the town and pulls Layton and Luke into an investigation built around puzzles, observation, and deduction rather than action or spectacle.
Luke now lives in America because of family circumstances, but his interest in brainteasers is still intact. Solving small everyday cases around town has earned him the nickname “Great Detective Luke,” while Layton remains the archaeology professor from Gressenheller University, known in London for his long history with strange cases and difficult riddles.
Steam Bison’s cast reflects the city’s mechanical identity. Elinora and Elida Allinston come from the town’s wealthiest family, but their goals are different: Elinora is drawn to inventions and can repair machinery, while Elida is studying to become a stage actress. Other characters include inventor Eggmuffin Sonder, Bolt Allinston, Sheriff Bobsley, the eagle Falcon, and Mystella.
Puzzle design is being handled by QuizKnock, the group led by Takuji Izawa that works at the crossroads of knowledge and entertainment. That detail matters for a series defined by the quality of its riddles, the rhythm of its conversations, and the pleasure of connecting clues that do not immediately seem related.
Mystella also points to how exploration may work in Steam Bison. She runs the town’s fortune-telling house and keeps track of unsolved puzzles, giving players a clear reason to revisit open problems while moving through the larger case. The structure fits a Layton adventure built around careful attention instead of rushing from scene to scene.
The release date trailer is available in English and Japanese, showing the new case with Steam Bison’s steam-powered streets as its backdrop. For players following December releases, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam now has a clear date, a broader cast, and confirmed platforms across PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC.
