Tianji: Shadow of the Ancients will launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. The new turn-based RPG from Justdan International is directed by the creator known as the “father” of the Xuan-Yuan Sword series and uses China’s Tang Dynasty as the setting for an adventure combining tactical combat, exploration and a mystery-driven story.

The story takes place during the turbulent Tianbao era. It begins when the Tianji Guard, a secret organization serving the Imperial Court, investigates a thousand-year-old ruin in Bashu. During the mission, its commanding general puts on a strange bronze mask, loses control and leaves the organization effectively destroyed. Months later, the mysterious Xuanxin Order rises across the region through masks and spiritual arts.
Protagonist Shangguan Shuo awakens with no memories inside one of the Order’s strongholds. Only two clues remain: a fish-shaped token belonging to the Tianji Guard and an unusual mask. His search for his identity takes him across Bashu and into a millennium-old subterranean city, gradually pulling him deeper into the conspiracy surrounding the Xuanxin Order.
Combat aims to make traditional turn-based battles feel faster through Chain Skills, Weak Point Exploitation, Pursuit Skills, Block Counters and bonuses for avoiding damage entirely. Enemies are visible on the map, letting players choose whether to engage, while a large enough level advantage can instantly clear weaker opponents and keep exploration moving without unnecessary encounters.
Exploration adds its own action elements. Shangguan Shuo can climb, swim and solve environmental puzzles across hand-drawn 2D locations influenced by traditional landscape painting. Towns also allow free switching between day and night, revealing different hidden events and items. Companions contribute beyond combat through individual abilities tied to cooking, equipment refinement, Core upgrades and trading rare items.
