Ground Zero Hero will launch on August 20, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC via Steam. Created by Australian solo developer Rowan Edmondson and published by Acclaim, the horde survival action roguelike takes the formula popularized by Vampire Survivors and drops it into a hand-drawn post-apocalyptic cartoon. Acidic colors, absurd humor, and irradiated freaks define fast runs where the screen gradually fills with increasingly overwhelming enemy swarms.

Players travel through multiple radioactive wastelands, destroying mutated creatures and absorbing their remains to unlock new mutations. Every upgrade changes the current build and can interact with previously collected powers, gradually turning the hero into a walking experiment capable of surviving more dangerous threats. Progression includes more than 80 upgrades spread across multiple paths, over 60 unique enemies, and environmental challenges tied to different biomes. Each run becomes a search for combinations strong enough to withstand the constantly increasing pressure.
Mutant remains are not the only valuable resource in the wasteland. Smashing piñatas provides candy, while safes must be cracked under pressure to collect additional rewards. The basic combat loop is immediate, but movement, positioning, and upgrade choices determine how long a run can continue. The official website for Ground Zero Hero reflects a game built around bullet hell combat, roguelite progression, and a deliberately grotesque sense of humor.
An Endless Mode will let experienced players push their builds beyond the standard runs, while 60 separate challenges provide additional objectives to complete. The dynamic soundtrack also changes alongside the gameplay, reacting as battles become more intense. A free demo is available now on Steam. Console versions will receive a 10 percent launch discount through August 27, while Steam buyers will save 15 percent through September 3. Between unstable mutations, candy-filled piñatas, and the ability to give birth to a man in a chicken suit, Ground Zero Hero is treating the apocalypse as an excuse for experimentation rather than misery.
